FAQ:
Q1:What is the difference between pipe and tube polishing?

A: Pipe polishing

  • Focus: Functional performance

Pipes are mainly used to transport fluids or gases

Pipe 👉 More commonly used for large diameters (such as oil transportation, water supply, and drainage)

  • Polishing is usually done to:

Remove rust, scale, and weld marks

Improve corrosion resistance

Surface requirements:

Can achieve a mirror finish, Ra≤0.4

  • Typical applications:

Oil & gas pipelines

Water supply and drainage

Chemical and industrial piping

Tube polishing

  • Focus: Precision and appearance

Tubes are used for mechanical, structural, or decorative purposes

Sizes are defined by outside diameter (OD) and wall thickness

  • Polishing aims to:

Achieve smooth or mirror finishes

Improve dimensional accuracy and surface quality

Meet aesthetic or high-precision requirements

  • Surface requirements:

Much higher than pipes

Often requires fine polishing or a mirror finish (Ra ≤ 0.2 μm, even 0.1 μm)

  • Typical applications:

Stainless steel decorative tubes

Automotive and aerospace components

Furniture, handrails, medical or food-grade tubes

Q2:What grit belt should I use?

A: That depends on the material and the finish you want. The final polishing effect is determined by the polishing process. We can start with an 80-grit abrasive belt for rough polishing, then switch to finer abrasive belts of 120 grit,240 grit,400 grit, and 600 grit. Finally, using a flap wheel and a cloth wheel, we can achieve an 8k mirror finish.
Here’s a quick, practical guide 👇

If you’re starting from a rough surface

P60–P80 → Heavy material removal, weld marks, scale

  • General grinding/deburring

P120–P180 → Smoothing scratches, preparing for finer finishing

  • Fine finishing

P240–P320 → Satin / brushed finish

P400–P600 → Very fine finish, pre-polish

  • Pre-polish / near mirror

P800–P1000 → Pre-polishing before buffing

  • Material tips

Stainless steel: P120 → P240 → P400 (then buff if needed)

Carbon steel: P80 → P120 → P240

Aluminum: P180 → P240 → P320 (avoid too coarse)
